Tainted with lead and it leaksThe writing on the glass was tested and found to contain lead. This may not sound like a problem because your child doesn't come in direct contact with the glass. BUT when you clean it, it will be soaking with the parts of the bottle that your child puts in her or his mouth. Also it leaks. So basically it doesn't do what it's designed to (i.e., hold water) and it poisons your child.Buy it if you're looking for a toxic paperweight but don't buy it for your kid.1my daughter seems to be doing fine. It was a rough weekend to say the ...Forgive my PSA, but I can't think of any other way to help ease the knot that continues to live in my stomach after our experience.Friday morning, my 10 month old daughter was drinking water out of a Green Sprouts Glass Sip N Straw cup. I picked the cup up to wipe oatmeal off of it, and heard the sound of clinking glass. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the glass at the top of the cup had shattered and there were shards of glass in the water at the bottom of the cup. The cup has a safety feature (holes in the bottom of the plastic outer shell) that theoretically will drain the water out of the cup if the glass inside breaks. This didn't happen in our case because the glass broke at the top, spilling glass shards into the bottom of the cup and the remaining water.Long story short, after a trip to the ER, a follow up trip to her pediatrician, 48 hours of observation and two sleepless nights, my daughter seems to be doing fine. It was a rough weekend to say the least, but thank god it doesn't seem that she ingested any glass. I am in contact with Green Sprouts (parent company: I Play, inc.), hoping that they will recall this item until this flaw in design can be corrected. If you are using glass lined drinking cups of any kind for your kids in the hopes of avoiding the toxic chemicals leeched by plastic, please be very careful. Be vigilant about checking the cup when it is inevitably dropped on the ground by your child. Please share this with parents in your communities. I'm not out to "get" Green Sprouts, and I am not a litigious person, but I have to share my experience on the off chance it will prevent this from happening to anyone else.We got really lucky.1GREAT CUPI have never written a product review, but I have decided to start in light of how much I depend on them when I am considering a purchase.Short Version: This cup is fantastic- don't hesitate to buy it.Long Version: I love this cup. I was looking for a glass and silicone option. This cup fits the bill and the cherry on top that it (1) has (removable) handles and (2) comes with both a sippy spout and straw option. I want to address a few of the complaints I have read about this cup:-"There are too many components to clean." I have never taken issue with this. Basically, there is a base, an inner glass which sits atop the base, an outer plastic cup which encases the glass and screws into the base, the handles, and the ring and spout/straw portion (the straw version does have an additional part the spout does not). Yeah, it might be more than a typical cup, but it is dishwasher safe (though I do always wash the silicone portions by hand) and even if you are handwashing, it really takes all of 30 seconds. Not an issue to me. To each their own.-"The glass breaks too easily." My child has dropped this from his highchair many times and tossed it across the floor whenever he was tired of drinking. We have no carpet in our home (tile and hardwood) and it has never broken or cracked. Earlier this week, I was holding him on my shoulders (I am 5'7") and he chucked it on the concrete slab we were standing on. I was sure it was done for, but NOPE, held up like a champ. 2+ months and going strong.-"Handles and spout don't align for proper drinking positioning." I had to laugh at this poor OCD soul. I TOTALLY know where they are coming from (a tad OCD myself- hollaaaaa!!!), but do NOT let this stop you from buying this cup. The handles twist and you are always EASILY able to position the spout and the handles appropriately for little one to drink easily. The trick sometimes is getting the little sprout fellow on the cup to line up perfectly within the center of the handles and directly below the spout. Choose your battles.-"It is hard to get liquid from the straw." Not sure what to say about this one. I can only speak for my own experience, but at 14 months (one year when I first purchased this cup), my son has never had any issue getting liquid through the straw and neither have I...I have been very pleased with this cup. I originally purchased two and am back to get a couple more. Highly recommend.UPDATE: Still loving the cup six months later and had the pleasure of dealing with their customer service (not due to an issue with the cup, but rather a component I misplaced). Great product and A+ customer service to boot. Very rare and very awesome.5Great cupI am one of those moms who is paranoid about plastic. I have been searching for a cup that does not spill, does not break, and is either glass or stainless steel. I have tried the munchkin stainless steel 360, small glass water bottles, and this for everyday use. My toddler has milk in his cup, so it needs to be reasonably easy to clean. These cups fit the bill: they are not indestructible, but it s worth the extra replacement cost to me because I can see if it s clean and I m not worried about the plastic. What has broken? My toddler has chewed the straws multiple times (I m probably on straw #10). The glass insert has broken twice in 1 1/2 years. I ve been considering the contigo stainless steel water bottles, but reviews indicate that the lids don t stay clean. The stainless steel 360 does not leak and seems reasonably easy to clean, but we haven t used it much because it doesn t have a handle and my toddler prefers this cup. I expect the 360 will get more use in the future. I am aware of the lead scare. The lead paint was apparently on the outside of the glass insert as hash marks to indicate ounces. I replaced my inserts for free from the company, and I am troubled they were using lead paint (where did they even find paint with lead in it?!) but I do not think there was much risk of exposure to my toddler because the paint was on the outside of the insert, and the insert was inside the plastic cover. So troubling but this is still the best cup I ve found.5DO NOT BUY LEAD PAINT IS USED FOR THE MEASUREMENTS PRINTED ON GLASS BOTTLEParents beware these cups have lead paint used for the serial number and measurements on the side of the interior glass bottle.I was looking for larger glass Sippy cups when I was googling and found a blog with the claim about these Green Sprouts bottles having lead paint.I couldn t believe it so I purchased 3M Lead Check swabs to see for myself. You will see in the attached pictures the test swabs and the result of the test I have two bottles and the one on the right is where I tested the paint. You can clearly see the white paint has turned pink and the swab has turned pink. This is a clear sign that the paint is positive for Lead.1TOXIC CONTAINS LEADDo not buy this product it contains LEAD on the outside writing to the glass portion. Lead is a neurotoxin for young children and can lead to low IQ among other health issues. The silicone also contains cadmium. This cup is toxic.I am very disappointed with this company for not doing the correct testing as my son used this cup regularly for a month. Please reference the natural baby mama blog for more information on this.1DO NOT BUY!!! Dangerous!DO NOT BUY!!!! Last night, my daughter's cup shattered in such a way that the glass still held most of its shape and therefore held the water as well with tiny shards of glass at the bottom. I was right there when she dropped the cup and the drop did not sound any different than normal. I figured it would break eventually (it is glass in the hands of a toddler). I never imagined it would break without my knowing, and continue to hold its shape and the water. (Once I took the glass insert out of the plastic the bigger pieces came apart.) After spending the day at the ER, we are hopeful my toddler did not swallow any glass. This is definitely a design flaw that needs to be fixed before a baby is seriously injured.1Not sure if it still contains lead or notWe really like this bottle because it's glass and all the components come apart for cleaning. We use a dishwasher basket for the straw, sippy part, top lid and bottom. I like having this non-porous bottle for things such as milk which I don't want to serve in a plastic sippy cup (bpa free or not). After reading reviews I saw that moms who tested the writing on the bottle for lead found that it tested positive for lead. It seemed that only the measurement writing tested positive for lead. So after purchasing this I looked at my bottle and saw that it had no measurements on it anymore. The manufacturer sent me a generic email asking if I was satisfied and to contact them if I had any questions. So I asked them how I could be sure my bottle from my batch didn't have any lead on it. It has been a month and they still have not replied. This disappointed me greatly! If they had replied, I would have purchased two or more bottles, so we could swap all our sippy cups to glass. As it stands right now though, I just don't want to invest in this company if there is a potential for lead. I do not have a lead testing kit yet, perhaps I will get one and answer my own question. Will update if I do. For now we serve our 1.5 yo daughter her milk in this which she chugs within 10-15 minutes. Then it is taken away and dismantled for the dishwasher. She has dropped it several times on carpet and the bottle has stayed sturdy so I am glad it's durable.3LEAD & CADMIUM !!!!!!!!!Do not buy this product - it should be recalled!! The outside of the glass has measurements printed, like a measuring cup - using lead paint which tested positive at 3,003ppm according to an article on natural baby mama. Some of the plastic/silicone parts tested also high for cadmium! I thought it was a great product until I read this.1I love the glass inside *UPDATED*We kissed many sippy cup toads before finding this prince! She can hold it upside-down without dripping or leaking! I love the glass inside!***UPDATE*** 11/2015We have since replaced the inside glass as well as the straw and and purchased another whole sippy cup in the last year. We kept rebuilding this sippy cup because we loved it so much. That is until yesterday when I put a piece of ice inside the glass and it broke a hole through the bottom with a simple tap of the ice against the glass! I was shocked to see that the glass at the bottom was so terribly thin especially compared to the rest of the glass. Since our daughter is a toddler and throws this glass around all the time we no longer feel comfortable using this sippy and will choose a stainless steel option over rebuilding this one yet again. Very sad because all totaled we probably spent $50 rebuilding the sippy cup and closer to 70 with the extra one we bought. I wish they would go the extra mile and make the glass stronger! See pic3
