Customer Reviews

Toggles system On/Off when transitioning from wet to dryWorks great to disable the system after a rain and was really easy to install. The problem I have is if the system is scheduled to run as the sensor is drying out to re-enable the system, the sensor will toggle back and forth about every 20 seconds, turning the system on and off. Not a big issue for most, but unfortunately I have a well/ pump which will wear out faster from cycling on and off constantly. 2Worst service everUnit looks nice and easy to hook and program. I connected in an Orbit rain gauge and can't figure out how to activate it I the software. For 3 days straight I've called the support line. When I get the phone line and actually make a connection I'm put on hold. One day I waited 40 minutes. I tried chat and it tells me to wait for an agent and just like clockwork, every 3 minutes I get message "please wait for agent. I've tried chat all different times of day and get same result. Maybe somebody from Orbit monitors these reviews. One can only hope. I had older Rainbird timer and they always answered the phone. I liked what I read about the B Hyve and decided to upgrade. Mistake if I need support?? 1Can't set temperature at which it turns off watering - I returned itSo, with this shut-off for watering timers, one can set the amount of rain before it shuts off the timer -- but it also has a thermometer which shuts off the water if the temperature falls below 37F. AND SAID TEMPERATURE IS NON-ADJUSTABLE!! That might be fine for people in colder climates, but here in Southern California I don't EVER want the system to shut down due to temperature - it never gets cold enough to cause watering problems. And there seems to be no way to disconnect the rain shut off from the temperature shutoff. So I returned the turkey and bought a remote reading weather station and a remote controlled water timer -- so now if I see that there has been enough rain, I can set the watering timer to a rain delay myself (and this way I get to choose how long the rain delay should be - up to 30 days, I think) 2it has Brown Disk expand when it get wet, which pushes switch.inside of unit it has brown rings, which expand when it get wet. The expansion of multiple disks pushes switch, which open the output circuit.it is simple device, but designed well. see attached picture for brown disks expand when it get wet. 5Orbit rain sensorI recently purchased [4] rain sensors and installed them on my drip-system controllers at my ranch.Amazon has the lowest cost/no shipping $/and fast delivery! The [2] sensors that i installed on 'old' orbit controllers[wired in series with the valves 'common'wires tested fine. however the [2] sensors that i installed on 'new' orbit controllers [which contained sensor switches and connection lugs] would not work until i added a jumper-wire from the valve 'common' lug to the 'right-sensor-lug.then these [2] sensors also tested fine.[i sent an e-mail to orbit related to this problem but never heard back from them].we will have to wait for the Az summer monsoons to arrive[jly-aug-sept] to actually determine that the sensors shut down the drip-systems during rain storms.if the sensors work as stated they will be a major improvement in our drip systems and a large water cost saving also!! 5Great product and great priceGreat product and great price. Have been spending about 4 times the cost for my sprinkler company to replace every couple of years. This thing is simple to install. The directions are very clear and the functionality is the same as the Rain Bird it replaced. Not sure about longevity at this point but so far it works just as it should. Very happy. Wish I had discovered this option years ago. 5Rain sensorThe rain sensor is hard-wired. There is also a model which is wireless. The hard-wired unit is wired to interrupt the electrical current going to the irrigation zone solenoids. There is no way to override it, so if it rains enough to trip the switch you have to either go up and re-adjust it, or just do without watering until it dries out. This can be bypassed by the user just installing a simple switch between the wires that go to the rain sensor, essentially bypassing the switch. The switch does not contain a float mechanism. It works by rain causing expansion of some fibrous washers which in turn presses a micro-switch to interrupt the electrical current to the irrigation valves solenoids. There are two adjustments on the switch- one for how much rain it takes to trip it and the other for how quickly it will be allowed to dry after it gets wet. There is a calibration on the side for how much rain is needed to trip it.Overall the switch has worked quite well. I set it for 1/4 inch of rain when I installed it and that has been about right. I've only had one tim when it didn't come on and I wanted it to, and one time that it didn't turn off, probably because the switch didn't have time to react to the rain. The system obviously can't predict if it is going to rain later in the day which would eliminate the need for the irrigation system to run earlier in the day. That is up to the user and there is a system delay button on the irrigation controller to do that.Overall a 4 star rating. I'd give it 5 stars if it had a way to manually bypass the switch. I believe that the wireless sensor does have that feature. If I had known about the wireless sensor I would have gotten that, assuming it wasn't too costly. Not sure how reliable the wireless one is or how often one has to change the batteries. Probably worth a try! 4Dries fastEasy to install and works great. It will disconect the sprinklers at the right amount of rain, depending on the setting. The only problem is, it dries and reconnects the sprinklers in less than 24 hrs. If you live in Florida, in the summer and get 3" of rain, you don't want the sprinklers on the next day. No good for the lawn, no good for the pocket book. Presently I have mine with the opennings closed and set at 1/8" to see if I can get more than 24 hrs. Bottom line, if you can get one of the old "cup" sensors, grab it. 3Saves water & moneyI have it set for 1/4" and it cuts off power to my sprinkler valves when there is a light rain. Much more efficient and dependable than my old rain sensor. Well made, good value, and consistent operation. What more can you ask for? 5Good replacementI replaced my old rain sensor that had quit working. This was an easy replacement. The new one does have the freeze option that shuts of sprinklers it temperature is below 35 degrees--and added feature. It is working fine. 5
