Very Difficult to get good results with these Plastic Fids.It is very difficult, (I found it impossible) to go through 1/2 in double braided rope without distorting and stretching the rope at that point. I am going to buy the metal ones for my splicing needs. They're a bit pricey but in this case necessary.1DID NOT WORK WELL for my applicationFast shipping, but did not work well for my application. It seems due to being plastic molded there are not smooth as needed for easy insertion in the rope. Also the thickness reduces useable space needed inside the fid to get your rope inside. I eventually bought knitting needles 8mm and 10mm for less than any other fids I could find. These were aluminum and I had my rope loop made within minutes after cutting and smoothing the edges.2Not going to workThis is not a very smooth plastic and the hollow is insufficient to allow line in (walls too thick) The size is just not going to work with braided line and fid will not fit through to make splice. You can wrestle with it and you still wont have success. They are cheap for a reason, as in they are worthless. At least they are plastic and they can go into my recycle bin and maybe live a new life as something useful, like a garbage pail.1Does the JobI use these to run braided rope from gomment to opposite side gomment on poly tarps, make a loop through the gomment and use bungee cord through the braided rope loop. Instead of pulling on just the tarp gomment. In higher wind it doubles to triple the life of the poly tarps I use over the dog kennel, and over some equipment we don't have storage room for. They come in handy.5Not bad for the costThey are ok. But, really, based on what they cost, that was better than I expected. Just ordered some Ronstan fids, which are far, far superior, but then again they cost about 15x what these do.3Teaching the G-kids nautical skillsI learned to use a fid when I was about 12 and spliced and looped every piece of rope I thought needed it. The G-kids have never heard of a fid and were wondering how such great and otherwise 'complex' rope forms were made. Fids come in most price range and these are the cheapest I could find to stimulate the G-kids imagination.Excellent item to pass along practical know-how that might well disappear in a generation.5Perfect for the jobOrdered these to splice new synthetic rope for my winch. Perfect for the job. Could have spent LOTS more, glad I didn't. These fids arrived in a very timely manner (yay Prime). First time using this product, first time splicing a line. Worked fine, had no problems with the plastic seam grabbing threads - easy to push through one the synthetic winch rope. These are being added to my trail bag in case there's ever a need to repair while out on the trail.5Good product. These worked fine for me. You have to do a little prep work before use. I used a razor blade to trim the rough edges. It wasn't a problem. The plastic is as smooth as any anodized aluminum. Your not going to get a professional quality fid for a couple dollars.5OK value, rough exteriorI typically splice with a wire fid, but picked these up because they were cheap and could come in handy for certain splices I only do occasionally. Overall, I don't regret the purchase - am OK with the value.Good: The size assortment is nice, they were cheap.Bad: Outside of fids are rough, with a pronounced parting line from the mold. Even after sanding the rough spots down, they can catch and pull individual fibers pretty bad. Wall thickness is anything but precise.Totally agree with other reviewers that this is not the tool you want for double-braid eye splicing.3They're ok, just don't expect too muchTried to make an eye in an old piece of static line, but it didn't work at all. The fids were ok, but not sharp and slightly over-sized. Should work well enough in a pinch, but definitely not a finely made or long-lived tool.3Difficult to use compared to othersCouldn't beat the price so I bought this to create a closed loop for my winch line to mount the hook. I found this item to be thick and difficult to use compared to others I have used. Guess you get what you pay for.2Not recommendedI would strongly suggest that anyone trying to splice double braid line a half-inch or smaller in diameter NOT try to use these fids for the job. They are too fat to easily slip through the core or cover of double braid and too short to measure the customary length for marking entry points when splicing an eye in a piece of line. The cursory directions on the package are useless. I purchased these hollow plastic fids as an inexpensive substitute for the tubular metal ones I had left behind on a cruise. I'm sorry I did; they made the job considerably more difficult, time-consuming and frustrating than it would have been had I spent a few dollars more for the fids I needed. Life is too short to buy cheap tools!2These are not Fids!Splicing fits should be open on top. These are call splicing needles, as you insert the line into them and pass it though as you would a needle. This requires considerably more line as you need to pass the whole needle through. Also, I could not return these. So it's a total loss. Oh, and they are cheap plastic. Stay away1Probably OK for slippery line like polypro or spectra. The plastic fids are pretty much as described. Two problems from my perspective - vs. the equivalent aluminum hollow fids. A) the plastic is thicker walled than aluminum, so a 1/4" plastic fid (that accepts a 1/4" dia. line) is larger around by a fair amount than a 1/4" aluminum fid - and thus harder to push through a tightly laid line. B) compounding this problem, the plastic is much less slippery (against polyester or nylon) than aluminum, so it's even harder to bury in those materials. Suffiice to say that burying a 1/4" piece of single braid into a 3/8" piece (in prep for a tapered end-to-end splice) was very difficult - much more so than with aluminum fids I've used before. Perhaps a little dry or silicone lubricant on the fids will help.3
